History

A piece of history

Camping International is run by the Vermeulen family, primarily Sasja, Emmy, and Marleen. Marleen is the aunt of Sasja and Emmy, and Monique, the mother of Sasja and Emmy, as well as Marleen’s sister, Mirjam, can also be found at the reception. It’s a true family business.

The recreation industry runs in our blood, as we all have a background in the family business Camping de Pekelinge. Marleen’s parents (and consequently Sasja and Emmy’s grandparents) started their life adventure in 1983. They moved from Brabant to Oostkapelle and transformed an old farmhouse into a campsite: Camping de Pekelinge. The (grand)parents laid the foundation, but their children, Twan and Mirjam, along with their partners, developed de Pekelinge into one of the leading recreation companies in Zeeland. However, as de Pekelinge became increasingly professional, large-scale, and successful, the pressure to organize everything well became overwhelming. So, everyone in the family accepted the decision to sell de Pekelinge in 2020.

Meanwhile, Marleen (the youngest in the family) had already started her own campsite in Zeeuws Vlaanderen in 2006, called Camping International. Initially with her then-partner, who left in 2011. From 2011 to 2023, Marleen managed Camping International on her own, causing occasional stress and workload. Since Januari 1, 2024, Marleen has received assistance, and her nieces Sasja and Emmy are now actively involved in the family business.

Innovations at the campsite

Times change, and so do the preferences of guests. Over the years, we have expanded camping pitches , created new pitches with private sanitary facilities, ensured reliable Wi-Fi, and added new rental accommodations.

In the winter of 2024/2025, various renovations were completed:

  • The main building has been completely renovated. In essence, only the thatched roof remains. The rest of the building is new. This new main building houses not only the reception, but also the bakery and the launderette
  • A glass conservatory has been built at our play farm, so that you can enjoy the terrace feeling indoors even in rainy weather
  • The Pierewiet kitchen has also been adapted for large-scale pancake preparation. From 2025, you will be able to order pancakes in addition to tasty chips and burgers from the chip shop menu
  • We have built a brand new water playground in front of Pierewiet's terrace. From the terrace, you can keep an eye on your splashing children
  • Most of the camping pitches adjacent to the playground are now equipped with a new sanitary cabin.

Looking to the future

Together, we have plans to take the quality of Camping International to an even higher level.

As you can read above, we have been working hard on all kinds of innovations during the winter of 2024/2025. In the long term, we would like to offer even more camping spots for motorhomes and update the entrance area of the campsite.

Finally, we also want to do our bit for the environment and sustainability, so we want to invest even more in solar panels, charging stations for cars and possibly other forms of energy generation and storage.

In short: there is no shortage of innovations.
