A piece of history
Camping International is run by the Vermeulen family, primarily Sasja, Emmy, and Marleen. Marleen is the aunt of Sasja and Emmy, and Monique, the mother of Sasja and Emmy, as well as Marleen’s sister, Mirjam, can also be found at the reception. It’s a true family business.
The recreation industry runs in our blood, as we all have a background in the family business Camping de Pekelinge. Marleen’s parents (and consequently Sasja and Emmy’s grandparents) started their life adventure in 1983. They moved from Brabant to Oostkapelle and transformed an old farmhouse into a campsite: Camping de Pekelinge. The (grand)parents laid the foundation, but their children, Twan and Mirjam, along with their partners, developed de Pekelinge into one of the leading recreation companies in Zeeland. However, as de Pekelinge became increasingly professional, large-scale, and successful, the pressure to organize everything well became overwhelming. So, everyone in the family accepted the decision to sell de Pekelinge in 2020.
Meanwhile, Marleen (the youngest in the family) had already started her own campsite in Zeeuws Vlaanderen in 2006, called Camping International. Initially with her then-partner, who left in 2011. From 2011 to 2023, Marleen managed Camping International on her own, causing occasional stress and workload. Since Januari 1, 2024, Marleen has received assistance, and her nieces Sasja and Emmy are now actively involved in the family business.
Looking to the future
Together, we have plans to elevate the quality of Camping International even further. We aim to expand “Speelboerderij Pierewiet” as a recreational area, with a major renovation scheduled for the winter of 2024-2025. We hope to relocate the toddler pool, currently in the middle of the campsite, to the “Pierewiet” terrace so that parents can keep an eye on their little ones from the terrace. Additionally, we would like to renovate the main building at the front of the campsite to accommodate more functions, such as a bakery and/or laundry facilities.
Our camping pitches with private sanitary facilities are highly popular and well-occupied. We plan to provide more pitches with sanitary cabins in the future to meet the demand for camping with private facilities. Finally, we want to contribute to the environment and be more sustainable, so were are currently exploring options for installing solar panels.
In short, there is no shortage of plans!
